Goodbye summer, & hello Pumpkin Spice Latte season!
Alright, y’all — OCTOBER is here, she is fierce, & she is ready to party. I have no shame in my game admitting that fall is probably, without a doubt, most definitely my favorite season. There’s something about a crisp breeze blowing through my hair & layers on top of layers for my outfits that just gets me so incredibly excited to get dressed. There’s so many new patterns & styles to incorporate into your looks, plus it’s the perfect excuse to throw a a long sleeve t-shirt on under one of your favorite summer staples & continue to spread the love on. So, throw on your favorite record, diffuse a lil orange & cinnamon essential oil, & stock up on my favorite pieces for your fall wardrobe.
As my friend Emma Marlow said the other day — this is the time of year when bohemian babies like us absolutely T H R I V E.
First & foremost, I just want to preface all of the following information with this statement — your fashion is YOUR OWN. There are so many voices & outlets that will always try to dictate what you wear, when you wear it, & whether or not you should even wear it at all. Sometimes those voices are incredibly helpful, & other times they just really suck. Yes, fashion is trends & patterns, but we wouldn’t have these trends if it weren’t for someone out there who took a risk. Sure, it’s great to incorporate a few trending pieces into your wardrobe, but I fully believe that each individual has their own style that should be celebrated.
i take trends with a grain of salt.
I like to keep up with what’s new & what I’ll be seeing for the next few months, but I don’t go out & waste my paycheck on every single item that fits that specific mold that will be replaced in a few short months. Do you like the western trend? Awesome, try investing in a pair of amazing leather (or faux leather, if that’s your style) boots & some turquoise jewelry that you can easily add to any outfit that you already own. Clothes are amazing because you can wear one shirt on Tuesday with a leopard print slip over it, but then totally change it up on Friday with a pair of black jeans, a moto jacket, & a pair of leopard print heels.
i’m not telling you exactly how you should dress because that is up to you; however, i am trying to direct you to investment pieces that you will wear over & over again.
Fall is for LAYERS — ’cause, y’know, these days it’s about 40 degrees in the morning & somehow hitting the mid-eighties by the afternoon. Tops are great for layering, because there’s so many different options, but they’re also easy to remove throughout the day while still maintaining a #look. I’m obsessed with this Forever 21 Sheer Crepe Ruffle top, because it can be worn on its own for the perfect western-80s hybrid or layered beneath a blazer, like this one from ASOS. Also, for the warmer days with cooler nights, throw on a leather jacket & you can go from work to the bars. You can never go wrong with a distressed sweater, either. It is the perfect SOS piece of clothing for when you feel like there is absolutely nothing in your closet. Grab one in white, black, a pop of trendy neon; grab whatever you want & throw on your fav skinnies & you’re good to go.
Listen, it is so easy to fall into the black-jeans-with-everything routine this fall, & don’t get me wrong — I LIVE for a good black skinny, but there’s so many fun options for bottoms this season that you don’t want to miss out on.
MAKE A STATEMENT.
I’m currently obsessed with printed bottoms and thick, western-style belts — especially if the pants have some flare to them. I’m loving the stripped look, but if you shop around enough you’ll find some in the coolest prints like pleated plaid, bold snake skin, & fall florals. Any of these prints would also look great in skirt-form, but I’m really loving the chance to channel my inner Cher Horowitz with pleated plaid skirts & a matching blazer.
You can also never go wrong with a pair of tastefully distressed mom jeans & a crisp white button down with a pair of HOT PINK booties. I don’t know why, but I’ve been obsessed with hot pink for the fall. It’s the perfect stand-out color that puts the finishing touch on your favorite outfit. I suggest looking for pops of pink in booties, clutches, & your fingertips.
Alright, now it’s time to talk about those little details that can easily make or break an entire outfit. If there’s one thing & one thing only you take away from my blog, I want it to be that you can make ANY outfit trendy with the addition of a few accessories. I truly believe that, when you are curating items for your closet, you start with the basics ( also, a huge post about my must-have closet basics coming, so keep those eyes locked in for that ) & then follow those pieces up with trending items. Spend your money on high-quality, durable items that will carryover from season to season, year after year, & then use the remaining funds on trending items. When you have the classics in your vault, there really is no way to go wrong.
Shoes are my favorite, hands down. I remember growing up & hearing all of these stories about girls & their obsession with shoes — I was like, what? Shoes, really? I just didn’t understand at 10 years-old that I would soon become a full-blown shoe-aholic. I think they could easily be my weakness now, without a doubt. Right, mom? Of course, the Balenciaga dad sneakers are the absolute DREAM shoe to me right now, but the FILA Dad Sneaker from Urban Outfitters is a pretty decent substitution, if my bank account says so herself.
Aside from shoes, I’m a total sucker for a good jacket. I recently purchased the infamous Teddy Bear jacket from I.AM.GIA & I’ve been praying every single night that the temperature in Mississippi would drop so I could FINALLY wear it! These styles of jackets are everywhere on Instagram, so grab one while you can.
